Hi Jamie,

I've just received an email from a Leipzig government official saying that they soon are going to relaunch the site. The new site will also have versions in Dutch, Japanese and Russian. So your suggestion that Leipzig doesn't want to encourage Russians to visit the city was wrong.

Well, good. It was only a suggestion, after all. We're not in city government, and we don't know why they do things.

In a democracy you should have an interest in the way your city is being run and you should take a certain amount of responsibility for what happens in your city. So if you don't know why your city government does certain things, you can ask them (provided you want to know the answers.)

Of course, but sometimes your city government does things for secret reasons or reasons that government employees or officials are embarrassed to admit. Then they'll never tell you the truth. Do you think if I asked my city officials why they paid an art gallery owner $3.5 million for services never performed or even ordered they would actually tell me?

Don't wag your finger at me about how democracy works. I have lived in one all my life; you haven't.

If one individual lives their entire life in a democracy, it doesn't mean that this individual automatically understands the principles of democracy and takes an active part in developing it further. The vast majority of all people in any country are like sheep who follow a few leaders. It doesn't matter where exactly you grow up. What really counts is what you as an individual want to achieve, how you want to change the world around you. Is every single American a fighter for democracy only because they spend their entire lives in the US? Certainly not. People who spent parts of their lives in communist or socialist countries often have a greater motivation to change their society because they know how valuable personal freedom and freedom of speech are.

Also, why did you think I was 'wagging my finger at you'? Maybe you simply took too personally what I said?

The election and some people's continued enthusiasm for Barack Obama is amply demonstrates the truth of your second sentence.

Exactly. And the sentence will be true regardless of who will win the elections in November.

The sentence will always be true.

Read Sinclair Lewis's novel "It Can't Happen Here".
