How to pronounce the idiom? #1 (permalink) Tue Dec 20, 2011 11:33 am   How to pronounce the idiom?

Hello everyone,

In some idioms, such as: make up, take out, brush up on, put up with...
I don't know in each idiom, which word I will stress, or pronounce stronger?

Example: In "make up", I should pronounce "make" stronger than "up" or contrary ?

Are there any rules for stress? Please tell me know.

Thanks,
vntho

The stress normally comes on the adverb: make UP, take OUT, brush UP on, put UP with.

Of course the stress on the part (make take) is when the word is a noun.

Hi Mister Micawber,

If "take out" is non-separate, I pronounce "take OUT". Ex: take OUT your book.
In case "take out" is separate, for example: "I take her out" , do I still stress on "out" ?

Thanks.

Yes, the adverb still carries the stress:

I take my favorite aunt Alice OUT for dinner every Tuesday.
