Hi everybody!
1. I despise him.
2. I despise those who are cruel to animals.
Can I use 'hate' instead of 'despise' ? As far as I am concerned, they have similar meanings. What's the difference? In what context should I use 'despise' ? I am very confused. Please help me.
Thanks in advance.

To despise is to dislike from your own higher moral/ethical position.
