Work in or at some company? #1 (permalink) Tue Jan 03, 2012 13:16 pm   Work in or at some company?

Hi,

I'm translating my friend's CV and I got stuck at one point. Should I write:

Sales clerk in Apollo Wrocław Sp. Z O.O

or

Sales clerk at Apollo Wrocław Sp. Z O.O

?

One more thing - if I post here the entire CV, would anyone be so kind to check it's language correctness ?

Assuming "Apollo Wrocław" is the name of a company, "at" is preferable.

Apollo is a Computer equipment company and "Apollo Wrocław" is one of the branches (shop).

The answer is probably more complicated than you would wish. Usually you work in/at a shop (generic), but at/for a named company. in the case of a branch/outlet of a named company, the choice of preposition may depend on the exact formulation of the wording. In this case, if the company name is "Apollo", I'm wondering if "Apollo Wrocław Sp. Z O.O" is itself correct. To me, the placing of "Sp. Z O.O" makes it seem as if the company name is "Apollo Wrocław". I'm wondering if it should be "Sales clerk at Apollo Sp. Z O.O, Wrocław"?

Well the thing with Apollo is complicated too :) Back then, Apollo sp. z o.o. was divided and every branch was a separate company, hence Apollo Wrocław Sp. z o.o. Only recently the company has merged into one.

As for the prepositions tell me if I'm right:

-He's a sales clerk in a computer shop
but
-He's a sales clerk at Apollo ?

Shold working for be usedent when the company is rather providing services than stricte products or the occpation is more represative? I mean would there be a difference between:

I work for google
and
I work at google ?

Yes, these are OK.

"at" tends to more strongly suggest a premises of some sort, while "for" tends to suggest a more abstract corporate entity. I suppose in Google's case "for" would be more usual because the location of Google's premises seems less important than their purpose as a company. If you were talking about a local company whose premises your audience were familiar with, you might prefer "at".

"Google" should have an initial capital, by the way.
