Are these sentences natural? Jan 13 #1 (permalink) Fri Jan 13, 2012 16:01 pm   Are these sentences natural? Jan 13

Hi,

Are the following sentences natural to a native ear?

1. These numbers are ballpark, as I have just eyeballed them from a chart.

2. The prudent track record of this organizing committee can be exemplified in the best-in-region performance stats of their group.

3. The only reason I don't commit to any role in the meeting, in advance, is because I don't know if I will/would be here next week.

Thanks,
MG.

1. This is not my favourite sentence ever. For me, the combination of jargony "ballpark" and slangy "eyeballed" -- which somehow I associate with East End* "cops 'n' villains"-speak -- seems just a bit too much. However, some people might say such a thing, and as a sentence in casual conversational English it is not specifically incorrect.

2. I think you mean "The prudent track record of this organizing committee is exemplified by..." As far as the rest is concerned, do you mean that the performance is good compared to that of other groups, or that the performance is good compared to other entities within the same group?

3. Is this a general statement about the speaker's habits, or a statement about a meeting scheduled for next week as of the time the statement was made?
