Out of the eater... #1 (permalink) Tue May 16, 2006 15:09 pm   Out of the eater...

Hi,
Got to know about this site through a friend-----and really loved it. So informative so interesting------Hats off to all teachers!

These days I am reading the Holy Bible and a riddle in it totally baffled me.

Samson makes a wager with the Philistines that if they answered his riddle he would give them 30 silver cloaks.(In fact previously he had killed a lion on whose carcass he had seen a swarm of honey bees later) Philistines find out the answer, though with dishonesty, from his wife.

See the riddle.

Samson: Out of the eater came forth meet; out of the
strong came forth sweetness.

Philistines: What is sweeter than honey? What is stronger
than a lion?

And they win the wager ending up getting thirty cloaks from him.

(Could anyone of you elaborate the riddle to me-?----I do not find any rhyme or rhythm in it-no connection between the question and the answer.

I would be grateful for your help

Meat, not meet #3 (permalink) Thu May 18, 2006 13:44 pm   Meat, not meet

Hi Ashley

"Out of the eater came forth meat; out of the
strong came forth sweetness."

It's a riddle simply because Samson didn't specifically mention the lion or the bees, but rather only "eater", "meat", "the strong" and "sweetness".
