What better... #1 (permalink) Fri Jan 13, 2012 22:59 pm   What better...

Hi everyone,

I know I've already asked this question before, but I can't find them back in my posts, so I'll ask it again:

- What better person to ask to cure him than a doctor.
- What better tool to use than a pair of sheers to cut these bushes.
- What better way to get rid of his enemy than to lock him up, where nobody could find him. (heard this in a detective)

Are these sentences grammatically correct? If you have other examples of this type of sentence, would you be so kind as to share them with me?

Thanks
Alexandro

garden shears, not sheers.
They're okay otherwise.

Thanks Beeesneees. Is there any way I could retrieve my other posts on this subject?
Could you also say:

- What better person to ask than a doctor to cure him. Since you can also say: 'What better person to ask than a linguist to define a cliché.'
- What better tool to use to cut these bushes than a pair of shears.

I just started wondering about it.

Thanks
Alexandro

Your previous post on this subject was made in October. There's no need to 'retrieve' it as it is not missing.
Perhaps this explains why Torsten tries to encourage members to give their threads meaningful, relevant titles, rather than just general 'are these correct...' or 'Please review my writing' type titles.

I found your previous post by performing a search on the main search page . I used these settings:
search for keywords 'what better person to ask'
search for author 'Alexandro'

The sentences are okay.

"What better person to ask to cure him than a doctor."
Is it a statement or a question?
Which word is the verb of this statement or question?

Thanks Beeesneees. So the sentences in my first and second post were correct. You can use them both, right?
Alexandro.

It can be a statement or a question. To know which depends on the speaker's tone or the way it is punctuated.
As you can see, there is more than one verb, including the assumed verb 'to be':
What better person (is there) to ask to cure him...
