Mister Micawber, 1. I was in a hurry because I didn’t want to be late for school. (OK) 1a. I was in a hurry because I didn’t want to be late to school. (OK) 5. They decided to consult a doctor. (OK) 5a. They decided to consult with a doctor. (OK) Can I assume above both set of sentences are correct? |

#1 has no object for one of its transitive verbs. #4 and #5 have the wrong verb form. #6 verb is not wrong, but it is only for limited circumstances. Please fix the 4 problems and re-post. _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |

No.
#1: I told you that #1 needs an object, not a verb change. #4: Notice the durational phrase 'for the last 3 weeks'. That is critical to verb choice. #5: The phrase 'every year' is critical to verb choice. #6: You have not tried to fix it yet. _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |

Mister Micawber, 1. I write to you to thank my birthday present. 4. For the last three weeks the shop has been closed. 5. Every year she has been making two trips to Singapore. You have replied for #6 as below: '#6 verb is not wrong'. That is the reason, I didn't attempt. Please help me with your own explanation for all. |

#1- Please read my original comment about #1 CAREFULLY. #4 - Good! #5 and #6 are now both 'correct' in that they can be used in limited circumstances (i.w. with certain further context). However, both are 'wrong' in that they are the expected, usual verb form in these cases. Please try again. Do not be lazy and accept any answer. _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |

1. I write you to thank for my birthday present. Is it OK? 'write' is transitive in American English. Am I right? I am not lazy but I accept I am not intelligent. Please I beg you to explain the grammar involved with #5 & #6. Thanks. |

#1-- You must add an object to the other verb in the sentence. #5 and #6 both require simple present verb forms because they refer to a repeated action and a condition respectively. _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |

5. Every year she makes two trips to Singapore. 6. Most of the children live quite near the school. As per your guidance, I have written above. Will it be alright? 1. I write you to thank you for my birthday present. I hope I have rightly written the object 'you' in #1. Is #1 OK? But the object 'you' gets repeated in the same sentence. Please guide me. Thanks. |

Hello Fatima.
I think ''Thank you'' is right here because it is a full word/expression. let's see what Moderators will say. |

Mister Micawber, I rewrite #1 to avoid the repetition of the word 'you'. 1. I write to thank you for my birthday present. Is it OK? What about #5 & #6 I wrote above. Please comment and guide. |
