Culture is a dangerous thing!

In Marketing Management, there is a subject name 'Cross cultural research'.

Like a color, its meaning is different country to country.

When you show the 'thumb' as a winner sign it could be a devastated situation for your life in the Middle East!

You can't show up a shoe picture without much careful in Indian culture,

So, so --do you have more idea?

...

in medical labs..there is one test called '' blood culture test...''

Blood culture is a microbiological culture of blood. It is employed to detect infections that are spreading through the bloodstream (such as bacteremia, septicemia amongst others). This is possible because the bloodstream is usually a sterile environment.

Very interesting topic!

I have just read an article in a very good American magazine. It tells American business people how to act in country X. (I do not want to name the country.)

That magazine says: (1) In country X, the employee should be the first person to extend his/her hand to the boss. In other words, a boss never extends the hand first in a handshake. (2) When an employee shakes hands with the boss, the employee's grip (how he touches the
boss's hand) should be WEAK. It shows humility. (Here in the United States, we are taught to have a firm -- strong -- grip when we shake hands.) (3) In country X, never give anyone a clock as a gift. Why? Because the sound of "give a clock" in their language means the same as the sound for "visiting a dying relative." (But it's OK to give a wristwatch.) (4) Remember that the number "four" is considered bad luck in country X. Why? Because the sound for the word "four" is the same as the sound for "death."

As you said in your post, there are many cultural differences in the world. Of course, I do NOT know whether the article in that magazine was correct. But I feel that all tourists should be taught these cultural differences BEFORE they visit other countries. For example, I have heard that in some countries, it is OK to ask "How much money do you make at your job?" I think that most Americans feel that such a question is very rude.

Oh, yes, I have also heard that in some countries, you should not visit someone's house and say "I like that rug." Why? Because the people who own the house will then give you the rug!!!

Hi James M!
How do you do, Sir?

Could you remember me? Several months ago, I met with you here.

This is the practical subject of Marketing research in MBA derived from pure psychology.

Never mind, America is the Beacon light for many things, they have implemented many things, I mean (theory) implementation in the practical life. She can lead the world very easily, unfortunately, she is not cordial!

She could have controlled more things if she had done this cordiality properly.

However, this subject helped many countries to penetrate the other market safely.Russia was very much conservative so that they couldn't have succeeded.
A curious reader may search by internet -cross cultural research- heading subject from library of congress as not every university has this subject yet.

My university only had touched few in 1991. But I read most from the 'The executive digest' and erstwhile USIS library in Dhaka.

Thank you for the interesting post. Yes, I guess that the "Executive Digest" would discuss such matters, which are very important for business people to know in this era of globalization. I hear that there is even a special kind of English that people are learning in order to do business. That is, some people do NOT want to learn English. They want to learn ONLY enough in order to do business. I forget the name of this special kind of English.

Every thing depends on your culture.

It drives us and it refrains us doing anything unconsciously. Unfortunately, a few persons
acting never reflects a country's image, it depends on also by the surrounding culture!

If your surroundings are mass uneducated, the reaction must be flammable!

Unfortunately, developed countries have not taught these reality for their maximum
students in their class room yet, and so do under developed countries.(they have no resource!)

That is why when a few portions of soldiers have made urine over dead bodies in somewhere it just distorted the that country's valuable images--that is very costly. So, it is better, let there be more light the people, as they have money, has not it???

Term culture is comprehensive. We can divide this term into the three major groups.

Excellence of taste in the fine arts and humanities, also known as high culture

An integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior that depends upon the capacity for symbolic thought and social learning

The set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution, organization, or group.

This third group is also an extremely wide and thorough, so my previous answer is related to this group.

When the person is behaving polite, mannered as one should behave, people in my country use term 'cultured' . And if we add prefix 'un' it means the opposite...

Exactly so!

Maximum dirty politicians are unkind because of uncultured mentality. A cultured person has possessed high values that also comes from high mental dignity.

Without a mental dignity. a person's inner side can't be developed or it doesn't permit them so they are either uncouth or opaque!

I agree and disagree at the same time. First to justify the fact where I am agreeing with you, mostly impolite and uncultured people whether they are politicians, social workers, homeless etc.. they end up very bad. For an example,if you have a homeless guy who is begging for the piece of bread, with kind words. And on the other side you have other beggar who is actually requesting, cursing and yelling at you to give him some money, what do you think who will 'win' your money?

But than again, to justify the fact where I am not agreeing with you is that dignity doesn't have anything to do with uncultured mentality. One can be uncultured but still with dignity, at least from his perspective.

Hi B3l1!

It is great that you have gotten a good chance in the USA. I congratulate on your success!

It was in 1998, I scored 609 in TOEFL(PBT). After that few years, I had no practice at all.Because, we have no much implementation English here in Dhaka.Several years breaking,I am now here last above one year.

Why do I say so, because I guess you are not so familiar in New York or in the USA. Two of my own brothers completed their PhD from the two universities, here. These universities are no. 3 or 5 accredited in Economics among 1200 universities in the USA. This helped them tremendous ways!

So, after one year, you should migrate to a university, that will help you in such ways, you never can imagine at this moment. It will just unlock your opportunities, that did Barack Obama's life.

My two own sisters are citizens of America, but I know a scholarship is more valuable than any brothers or sisters if you can use your aspiration in time, mind it in time not on time. Have you ever gone through the cliff's TOEFL suggestion book? It is good for much basic English specially for Article and Preposition using. I am preparing for 8 band scores in IELTS for near future, that is why I am here.

Hey Minhajquazi.

Thanks for reading my topic. I haven't did TOEFL. I somehow believe I am still now on that level, although I have no idea what it really means, and what are questions like. For this opportunity there was several requests.
1. To properly understand, speak and write English language, which I do at some level :DD.
2. To possess good knowledge about Economy, and to have good marks score. More than 8,00. I have near 9,00.
3. To be student of the university where I am studying.
4. To have a strong reason. To convince them.

That's all, I don't doubt that America will be one huge experience by all means. One big leap in my life, and it might reflect on my future. I haven't read the cliff's TOEFL book, what is it about? What is IELTS?

It's O.k.

Before departure, you can follow the ABC, FOX news or CNN to understand the accent
in the USA. Again follow the BBC for British accent. These are standard scales where you might face few local dialects everywhere that you shouldn't be afraid of.

Of course, cultural shock is inevitable, but I am sure, who are almost well in English language this ability is the best asset, everywhere in the earth as I did see in the past.

Question is whether you can speak eloquently! If not, practice it.Everybody judges you
how fast and eloquently you can speak--no body cares your writing in the Street,Airport, Hotel , and making friendship first time or every time. (for the time being.)

Many times I helped many people with gratis in abroad who have Doctoral degree, but can't communicate in English speaking properly, that is severely troublesome for them.

Thanks.
