Hello everyone.

I read story and couldn't understand one word in the sentence.

they laid twenty mattresses on the pea,and then twenty down blankets on top of the mattresses.

what is the meaning of down here?

"down" is very fine, soft feathers. A "down blanket" is a blanket or quilt incorporating this material.
