Situation
You work as the Personal Assistant to Holly Cohen, the Director of the Liddisford Chamber of Commerce. She has asked you to write a letter of invitation (to be signed by her) to Ms Alexandra Petrocelli, who was recently named UK Business Woman of the Year. Ms Petrocelli is currently the Northern President of the Retailers’ Association. The invitation is to speak as Guest of Honour at the Annual Dinner of the Chamber of Commerce in Liddisford.

The dinner will take place in Liddisford Town Hall on 22 December. There are usually around 200 guests at the dinner, which starts at 19.30 with a champagne reception. This is followed by dinner and a brief speech from the Chairman of the Chamber, who will introduce the Guest of Honour.

Task
Write a letter of invitation of between 150 and 200 words to Ms Petrocelli. Give details of the time and venue, along with an outline of the programme for the evening as described above. Be sure in your letter to ask about the topic she will speak about, assuming she accepts the invitation. You may invent suitable addresses.

Hi Mario,

This is a very well-written letter, but I did not really like the overall tone. It seems you are assuming she will accept the invitation, which may make Alexandra feel a little "put upon". Your first two paragraphs are ok, but in the third and fourth say things like "if you are so kind to accept our invitation" instead of just saying "you will have an hour to speak". Does that make sense? Also, you did not ask what she would like to speak about, which the assignment mentioned directly

Dear Ms Petrocelli,

First of all I would like to congratulate you on being the UK Business Woman of the Year.

It would be a great honour to us to have you as a guest speaker at our Annual Dinner of the Chamber of Commerce. The dinner takes place{this is ok, but I would prefer future tense} at Liddisford Town Hall on [the] 22nd of December. This event will start with a champagne reception beginning at 7.30pm and following[followed] by dinner.
We reserved one hour of speaking time for you and we will be glad to listen to your experiences. {This makes it sound as if you are doing her a favor by listening to her experiences. I would say "... we would greatly enjoying hearing about your experiences"}

After dinner the chairman of the Chamber will introduce you so you can show us how to become a perfect business person. {This sentence strikes me as coming off being a little sarcastic. I know that wasn't your intention, but when I call someone "perfect", I am exaggerating for some effect.}

We are looking forward to your positive response.

Yours sincerely

Hi, These letters are a little difficult to evaluate because I don't really know the relationship between the writer and the recipient. That being said, if I wrote a letter like this, I would be a little more ardent and deferential. Go on a little about what a great award Ms Petrocelli has won - the most outstanding business woman in all of Britain! - and what a great honor it would be if she would be so generous as to share her experience and knowledge with our humble chamber. Something along those lines. Also, the assignment said "Be sure in your letter to ask about the topic she will speak about, assuming she accepts the invitation", but you did not include this in your letter.

Dear Ms Petrocelli

Invitation To Our Annual Dinner {this line does not belong in a letter of invitation}

we {capitalize} would like to invite you to our Annual dinner. {If the official name of the dinner is "Annual Dinner", then capitalize both words. If it is "an annual dinner", do not capitalize. I would hope the chamber could come up with a more creative name ;) }
It will take place at the[on] 22 December in Liddisford Town Hall and starts at 19.30 with a champagne reception. There are usually around 200 guests at the dinner.
After the dinner the Chairman of the Chamber will give us a brief speech and introduce the Guest of Honour.
You are an[a] famous and a very important member for[to] us and you was[were] named UK Business Woman of the Year. {I am sure she already knows of her award. I would instead say something like "we would like to congratulate you on your award for UK Business Woman of the Year"}
It would be great {this is ok, but would be better to use a word like "wonderful" or "tremendous"} if you, as our Guest of Honour, could speak about your life and work at this event.
Please inform us about your decision by 02 December. We hope you promise to come[period] {This is grammatically correct, but sounds a little odd to me. It is almost as if you want her to promise because you won't quite trust her otherwise. I would write "We hope you will be able to come."}

We look forward to your positive response.

Yours sincerely

Dear Ms Petrocelli
I am writing as Director of the Liddisford Chamber of Commerce to invite you to attend as Guest of Honour at our Annual Chamber Dinner. May I offer you my congratulations on your recent award, which everyone here was pleased to hear about.

The Annual Dinner will be held on Friday 22 December, starting at 7.00 pm. We expect to have over 200 people attending.

The evening starts with a Champagne Reception in the main bar. At 8.00 pm we shall sit down for dinner, which usually takes about an hour and a half. After dinner I will say a few words, and introduce you formally as our Guest of Honour, before asking you to speak to the guests. May I suggest that you plan to speak for twenty minutes or a minute or two more.

I sincerely hope that you will be able to accept the invitation. I am sure your presence will make the occasion very special.

If you are able to be with us, perhaps you will let me know at some time before what topic you plan to speak on. I am sure that whatever you choose will be most entertaining.

I look forward to your early reply.

Yours sincerely
Holly Cohen
