Response:
Progress throughout the ages was possible thanks to original works. It is to true that before one is able to create something original first he or she must master respective field. Hence he has to study and understand other successful original works of the same area. By doing this he will be aware of the latest advances and realize what else there are left on which he may be successful. But one should not be limited with the works of others.
Original works demand hard work and great effort. It is not possible to create anything original if one is not expert on related subject. Therefore, one should do sufficient research and use others’ works as a source. It is not only humanely impossible but also a bit silly to rediscover what was already done. Nothing can be done except relying on successful work of other and trying to develop or add something new and original to that one.
Mostly it happens so that many original discoveries or inventions are closely related to each other. Take the case of simple wheel. None can know when it was invented but the case is that due to it life and progress become much easier. Since it was first used for transportation of heavy loads, its range of application has broadened constantly, from cart to modern automobile, from pulleys to dynamos. Obviously, scholars and scientists had extensively used this original invention in various fields.
However, at the same time if one is to create successful original work he should not restrict himself with study of the successful original works of others. He has to go beyond those works. In other words one must try to look at things differently, test new approaches. Because originality is not only bettering old ideas but also presenting reasonable and realistic new ideas.
To sum up, scholars and scientists first have to study successful original works of others because they will are like the fundament of new creations. They help crack the relevant field and serve as a guide to achieve the goal. Though one should not concentrate every time on works of others. Instead he must go beyond those limits and try to create new. Wherefore successful original work can be accomplished by combining study of great works of others and challenging new unknown boundaries.
