Hi Shatha In fact I find some difficult when I translating our proverbs because Arabic language has a lot of synonyms and the one word has a lot of meanings. The previous proverb it has main meaning is any girl always do such as her mother in every thing. I see that there some words hasn't in the meaning in our proverbs but them are very important to our proverbs maybe them has meaning but I don't know. We have a famous catch-word "our god spares our great-grandparents because they said in every thing _proverb_ ". When we "Arabs" give advise to anybody we use the proverbs for prove our viewpoint for example if you have chance and you wait because you want a big chance but the all chances gone. When I meet you I say: " I said that to you one bird in your hand better than ten on tree". So the proverb today: one bird in your hand better than ten on tree. Baldly the old Arabic poetry is very difficult and when I tried translating it to English I was failed, we have a lot of old stories which happened in desert but the most stories has sad end maybe because it is truth!! Now let me explaining to you about new literary personality it was live in my city and he famous poet in Arabic world he called "woman poet" Nizar Qabbani (1923-1998): Syrian poet and diplomat whose subject matter, at first strictly romantic, grew to embrace political issues as well. Written in simple but eloquent language, his verses, some of which were set to music, won the hearts of countless Arabic speakers throughout the Arab World. Qabbani, who was born into a middle-class merchant family, was also the grandnephew of the pioneering Arab playwright Abu Khalil Al-Qabbani. He studied law at the University of Damascus (graduated in 1945), then began his varied career as a diplomat. He served in the Syrian embassies in Egypt, Turkey, Lebanon, Britain, China, and Spain before retiring in 1966 and moving to Beirut, Lebanon, where he founded the Manshurat Nizar Qabbani, a publishing company. Meanwhile, he also wrote much poetry, at first in classic forms, then in free verse, which he helped establish in modern Arabic poetry. His poetic language is noted for capturing the rhythms of everyday Syrian speech. The suicide of his sister, who was unwilling to marry a man she did not love, had a profound effect on Qabbani, and much of his poetry concerns the experiences of women in traditional Arab society. Verses on the beauty and desirability of women filled Qabbani's first four collections. Qasa'id min Nizar Qabbani (1956; "Poems by Nizar Qabbani") was a turning point in his art; in it he expressed resentment of male chauvinism. It also included his famed "Bread, Hashish and Moon," a harsh attack on weak, impoverished societies that live in a haze of fantasies. Thereafter, he often wrote from a woman's viewpoint and advocated social freedoms for women. His Hawamish 'Ala daftar al-naksa (1967; "Marginal Notes on the Book of Defeat") was a stinging critique of unrealistic Arab leadership during the Six-Day War with Israel. Among his more than 20 poetry collections, the most noted volumes are Habibati (1961; "My Beloved") and Al-rasm bi-al-kalimat (1966; "Drawing with Words"). Qasa'id hubb 'Arabiyah ("Arabian Love Poems") was published in 1993. And now I'll tell you about some from his poetry I have no power "I have no power to change you or explain your ways Never believe a man can change a woman Those men are pretenders who think that they created woman from one of their ribs Woman does not emerge from a man's rib's, not ever, it's he who emerges from her womb like a fish rising from depths of water and like streams that branch away from a river It's he who circles the sun of her eyes and imagines he is fixed in place I have no power to tame you or domesticate you or mitigate your first instincts This task is impossible I've tested my intelligence on you also my dumbness Nothing worked with you, neither guidance nor temptation Stay primitive as you are I have no power to break your habits for thirty years you have been like this for three hundred years a storm trapping in a bottle a body by nature sensing the scent of a man assaults it by nature triumphs over it by nature Never believe what a man says about himself that he is the one who makes the poems and makes the children It is the woman who writes the poems and the man who signs his name to them It is the woman who bears the children and the man who signs at the maternity hospital that he is the father I have no power to change your nature my books are of no use to you and my convictions do not convince you nor does my fatherly council do you any good you are the queen of anarchy, of madness, of belonging to no one Stay that way You are the tree of femininity that grows in the dark needs no sun or water you the sea princess who has loved all men and loved no one slept with all men ... and slept with no one you are the Bedouin woman who went with all the tribes and returned a virgin Stay that way."

Salaam(Ni Hao):Dark Your posts are really instructive and interesting. Many thanks!i'd like to spend much time reading them to know new things.Xie xie(thanks) In literature there are considerable quatities of works about Women。 They are mostly charactered with kindness, mercy, sympathy and greatness ,etc。Just like the great pre-Soviet writer Golgi, his "Mother" is an ordinary but brave woman, Leo Tolstoy(Russian writer),also, gives Anna a life full of love and pain,"Jane Eyre" (i prefer),bright ,intelectual and confident ,to much extent, she is in the name of Neo_Woman ,shaped by Charlotte Bront ,"Carrie Sister" wanted to lauch a new life, leaft for Chicago ,where she started from scratch. after experiencing a lot she became a star .Theodore Dreiser endowed her with a simple mind ,even some ignorance, but finally she was successful ,got what she wanted...... But almostly we could find other words to describe women, as follows:weak, humble, timid and so on.They are by no means fictioned in literature, they are real reflections of lives.Even nowadays,we may not match women with those words, but they are still there.Mostly because of the visible differences in the sexual organs and related differences in the role each sex plays in the reproductive process, male have been observed in various cultures to be more likely to initiate activity.Females have been observed to be more altruistic ,that is ,more helpful to others, than males.Even so,women still have many difficulties than men, someday when we talk this mindlessly, almostly many people won't give their viewpoints openly or just give attitudes reluctantly. What made that,Some say ,it is the product of a specific cultural upbringing. Education problem, when we are in elementary schools, boys and girls seemingly have same oppertunities of study, even those teachers who don't think themselves as sex-discriminators,can't find reasonable excuses that boys are always encouraged more to do exercises in Libaries than girls, some american teacher assume that boys will do better in the "hard ","masculine"subjects of match and science, whereas girls are expected to have better verbal and reading skills,do you think it "sex-biased education"? family education included,do you still remember what the days were at your six age, boys have more out-doors room than girls, who are educated to stay at home ,even outside ,they should be asked to play whithin their parents' eyesights.Funny, those "lessons" carry over from the home to the classroom, where girls are generally observed to be more dependent on the teacher, more concerned with the form and neatness of their work than with its content, and more anxious about being "right "in their answers than in being intellectually independent, analytical,or original...... Will that be true all the time____Only women can bear children ,and only women can nurse them?although there is some cultural variability in the degree to which men also take care of their young offspring. Some social scientists insisit that the woman's role has always been essential in transmitting cultureal values from one generation to the next and that this conservative function is a key to social stability(really?),Somewhat it may be changed, but in its most important aspects it will remain what it has been in almost every culture (your country mostly?) for thousands of years!!!! OK,some people advocate more chances given to women, even in today's affluent countries and in socialist countries(China as well),they try to liberate women from domestic duties by providing job chances,large-scale day care,Yet,one can hardly say that women's roles have changed radically, even where women have moved into the employment market on a technical ,business,or professional level,it has mainly been in areas such as nursing, teaching, business,or clerical work(many men think women should do women work)which represent an extension of traditional maternal-housekeeping roles.Hardly to conclude we have found a satisfied answer, but ,what does appear certain is that the basic biological tendencies characteristic of one sex or the otherare resposive to every extreme of cultural conditioning!!!!!!!!!! However, when we read those romantic poems,we never feel sad but gratified......Thanks Again! |

Hi fangfang How are you? I prefer before I talk about position women in my country now. I must give you some truths about women in our history. In the old history before nativity we were respect the woman and we had so much form great women such as queen Palmyra Zanobia and queen Egypt kilo-patra. And in Islamic age we command from our god and our massager (Mohammad) We liberate the women from any iniquitousness. The woman before Islam she is grave and still she life and she didn't parity any thing maybe the animal better than woman and she was just maidservant to men but when come Islam to our countries it block all that. And the woman became nurse and doctor and warrior and teacher and the last a will our massager (Mohammad) is: you must do all well-being with women. But unfortunately in century nineteen and twenty the ignorance control at minds the men and they did all bad things against the woman, so crop out some versifiers and writers whose defiance on woman droit such as Nizar Qabbani. But now the woman in my country she is free and she can do any thing if she wants. And now I'll give some information and counting about woman in my country: We have women Members in parliament and we have woman minister and woman deputy president republican and a lot of woman officer. And these some count about woman in my country:(education) Par adult women whose know read and write? 2001 1999 1994 1970 91.6% 89% 87% 58% Par students in elementary school: 2001 1999 1994 1970 48% 48% 49% 47% Par students in secondary school: 2001 1999 1994 1970 71% 62% 23% 15% And in next post I'll tell you about great woman from my country. With love |

Hiiii,Dark: Nice talking to you, where did you get those figures?I ask you that for i am curious ,Maybe i have been confused by some movies which tell few things about women compared with men you there,I wonder if it is true that Men enjoy their rights more than women, especially in a family !In our neiboring country,Korea,i know it is true. But,chinese women are not the same, ,at least,i think it is!To much extent ,women do things better than men, like football(oh, though i don't want to say here, but it is the truth!LOL) ,Our foreign trade business official is Lady Wu Yi (vice president),The CEO Of Shang Hai Steel Company Limited(the biggest steel company in China) is Lady Xie,our Number one Volleyball team are all girls, table tennis as well.......Even in family woman is the master,LOL,,,,ok,Maybe it isn't all the case, but ,it is real! Hi fangfang I hope you be have nice time today. In this post I chose to you this proverb form our tradition: Let your money be insulted but not yourself Rather than ask favors, do the thing yourself Ok, sure you can know provenance last information is "Central Bureau of Statistic" in my country Syria. Now I'll give you small article about one of great women in my country:
Shou'aa, Ghada (1972-): Syrian athlete. Born in Mouhrada, a town in the Governorate of Hama, she started her sports career as a basketball player in the National Team before switching to heptathlon. She participated in the 1991 World Championships in Japan and placed last. In 1993, she won the silver medal in the Mediterranean Games in France. Her first great achievement was the Gold medal at the World Championship in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1995, when she won the title with a comfortable margin. In 1996, Shouaa won Syria's first Olympic medal in the Olympic Games that were held in Atlanta, United States. In the following season, she suffered a serious injury and she was out of the scene till 1999, when she participated in the World Championship but placed third. Injury prevented her from defending her title in the Olympic games in Sydney, Australia in 2000. Maybe you can tell me about your live and your family and daily your life because you girl and you better than me in speak about this subject. With love |
