I'm terribly sorry but I ......... what you said just now and I wonder if you could repeat it.

(a) wasn't listen to
(b) wasn't hearing
(c) didn't hear
(d) didn't hearing

According to me, the correct answer should be 'was not listening to' which is not in the options. This is because, if someone is saying something, you not only hear it but listen to it as well. The first person here obviously heard what the other person said, hence he knows that something was said but was not able to decipher it because he was not 'listening'.

And according to me, that is another option which is, unfortunately, not among those offered. Either works fine; we listen when we are paying attention and we hear when we are not, but in both cases, sounds can be noticed. Here, C is correct.

Hello Torsten,
I got only 7 out of 10 in my attempt of Listen vs Hear test.
I was a bit dissappointed with my result. As I went through explanation of wrong answers,my doubts get cleared.
I am eagerly waiting for your next lessons.
Manys thanks .

Can anyone help me to get understand. #34 (permalink) Sun Aug 09, 2009 6:42 am   Can anyone help me to get understand.

Dears I want to know that :

in Test no 4. Listen vs. Hear

Correct sentense is .....

"I have been hearing strange stories about you recently but I do hope that there is no substance in them."

but I want to know that.
why could we not write this sentense as follows:

"I am listening strange stories about you recently but I do hope that there is no substance in them."
