And according to me, that is another option which is, unfortunately, not among those offered. Either works fine; we listen when we are paying attention and we hear when we are not, but in both cases, sounds can be noticed. Here, C is correct. _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |

Dears I want to know that :
in Test no 4. Listen vs. Hear
Correct sentense is .....
"I have been hearing strange stories about you recently but I do hope that there is no substance in them."
but I want to know that. why could we not write this sentense as follows:
"I am listening strange stories about you recently but I do hope that there is no substance in them." |

I'm terribly sorry but I ......... what you said just now and I wonder if you could repeat it.
(a) wasn't listen to (b) wasn't hearing (c) didn't hear (d) didn't hearing Correct answer (c) didn't hear
Can we use 'didn't listen to' if it is one of the option given? |

Hi everybody,
I had the same problem to distinguish the difference between listen and hear, but now I can understand it. The funny thing is that in Portuguese(my native language) we have the same rule. Thanks a lot!

Hi Bui, You don't need the words 'two' and 'twice' together. Twice = two times, so "I have done this test twice." is correct.
There have been a number of discussions about the answer to question #1 in this thread. The correct answer given is (C): "I'm terribly sorry but I didn't hear what you said just now and I wonder if you could repeat it." Option (A): You would need to say "wasn't listening to' instead of 'wasn't listen to' for it to be correct (so you need to read the options very carefully - lots of people have misread this option). Options (B) and (C) are just incorrect grammar. Which answer did you choose?
If you give us the options you chose it might be easier for us to explain why they were the wrong choices. _________________ Cheers m' dears! |
