I'm asking this question because I'd like an answer. Up until now, I used to think that 'Britain' is only a noun and that it's not used with the definite article. I thought you can talk about Britain as a country. I thought that when you talk about the people you say 'the British' or 'the Brits' or 'the English'.

I see. That was a typo. I've gone back and edited it out.

If you are talking about people from Britain you can use 'the British' or 'the Brits' -- but not 'the English'.

You can use 'the English' if you are talking about people from England.

Hi Bev,

I'm sure every ESL learner knows that in addition to the English there are other ethnic groups and nations that speak English as their native language such as the Welsh, the Scottish and the Irish.
