There are many reasons the most important of which is that English is spoken in the single most powerful country of the world.

| I thing u.k. had alot of colony all around the world therefore they played very important roles over the world and they tought their language everybody who lived in their colony for example india thus people who wanted to trade with u.k. or its colony learned their language. English is most comman language on the world because of their imperialist policy |

It is spoken in Great Britain, which used to be the most powerful country in the world and is certainly still very influential, and it is also the language of the country that succeeded it as the most powerful country in the world, which is the United States. Plus, there's Canada, as well as Australia, which is also very influential in the world.
Before Britain became so powerful, French was the international language. |

| If the superiority of a language made it an international standard, surely we'd all be communicating in Esperanto by now. |

| I don't know. I'm intimately familiar with Esperanto (I can read novels in it and used to be able to write it fluently), and it's dry and boring in a way that other languages aren't. A language with no quirks or eccentricities really can't be adopted by a large number of people who really possess souls. |

Hi Jamie, what do you mean by 'the Britain'? The British or the country?

Well, that was what I meant, but the ensuing firestorm of controversy never materialized. |

So what is the difference between 'the British' and 'the Britain' when speaking about the nation?

I'm asking this question because I'd like an answer. Up until now, I used to think that 'Britain' is only a noun and that it's not used with the definite article. I thought you can talk about Britain as a country. I thought that when you talk about the people you say 'the British' or 'the Brits' or 'the English'.
