Hi, I really had a hard time understanding your 2nd paragraph. You repeated "merit" very often and were not always using it correctly. I am sorry I am not really familar with the GRE rating scale - I may have to do some research on it. For the TOEFL, I would rate this a 3 out of 5.

topic: ‘In order for any work of art-whether film, literature, sculpture, or a song-to have merit, it must be understandable to most people.’ response: I partly agree with the statement because in order to gain recognition [or] merit[,] any work of art, be it film, literature, sculpture, or a song, must be understandable to most people. According to me opinion or assessment of an expert can be sufficient to have merit. {this sentence does not make sense to me} Because not every work of art can be clear to understand{"clearly understood" but I think you mean "easily understood"}, therefore, relying on their [own] guidance and appraisal most people realize details and beauty of those works of art. It is people who decide whether any work of art deserves any merit, they opt[by opting] to accept or not. They are the key factor in being merited. Hence it should be understandable to the majority of people. To demonstrate[,] today’s cinema industry is one of the most prosperous sectors where spin cosmic resources{"spin cosmic resources" is unclear}. The film is considered to have merit according to number of people who have seen it that affect[, which affects its] income and popularity. That is why in order to be worthy [a] particular work has to be accepted by the majority of people. {this paragraph was not very convincing to me - why don't the most popular movies always win the major film awards?} On the other hand some works of art may not {display their true value so transparently}so transparent to see its true value. Their charm and uniqueness might be hidden deeply from the eyes and mind of a general{"average" or "normal"} human. How many of us can truly give[determine] the worth of, say sculpture or literature? Many great works of [the] past were not praised when their authors were alive. Only after their death owing to experts and specialists they became as valuable as[esteemed] today. For this reason there must be some people with respective knowledge and experience who can recognize the beauty and conceal the important details thanks to[by] which works of art are merited. No wonder nowadays books, films and others are released[publicized] with the opinion of the critics. And most people while choosing what to buy, watch or read they pay attention to the assessment of experts. Their view has the power to assure that certain work is worth to be merited[worthy of merit]. For instance Oscar, Grammy award and other similar ones are given according to the points given by a group of experts. At the end it can be said any work of art to deserv[ing of] value it should be understandable to most people. Work of art is [to be] applauded if it is liked by the majority. However people sometimes fail to give appropriate merit to truly worthy works of art. Thus it is the experts’ appraisal [that] is crucial in being merited. |
