The exercise is
Correct the errors in subject-verb agreement. Some sentences contain no errors.

* A number of planes were delayed due to the snowstorm in Denver.
* The number of passengers affected by the delays was great.

My correction is:
* True
* True
but my friends discuss them with me. They said that the second should be (were great) due to the plural (passengers). what I understand that in the first sentence we are talking about the planes but in the second we are talking about the number (the number was great). Am I right?
