Hi everyone,

I heard this sentence on television:

I can't imagine what you must have been going through. (as a way of saying: I know very well what you must have been going through). Is that correct, because I would say: I can imagine what you must have been going through.

Please shed some light on this.

Alexandro.

Hi Alexandro. I think it means pretty much what it says, though perhaps a slight exaggeration. You say this if you really have not gone through the experience that your friend is struggling with.

You can instead say "I know what you're going through" or "I know how you feel" if you have indeed had a similar experience. Although this is dangerous, because the response may be "no you don't!" or "this is different!"

Thanks Luschen! Would you also have a look at my new thread, but not just now. I still have to post it.
