Presidental candidate polls? #1 (permalink) Sun Feb 05, 2012 1:31 am   Presidental candidate polls?

Hi, I've been trying to find a site where I can see current polls on the upcoming presidential election in the US. So far, I haven't found any site that shows the support all the candidates are currently getting. I don't mean the caucus results. Can you show me a site where this information is available?

Many thanks,
Torsten

This is the one I follow - it does a lot of in-depth analysis of all the polls. You may need a NYT subscription to see it legally, although there are easy ways to get around the paywall (please don't tell, I really plan to subscribe as soon as they give me a good deal)

Hi Thomas, many thanks for this but on this site I can see only the caucus results. It doesn't show how many Americans would vote for the incumbent president if the elections were now.

This looks like a good one: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2012/president/president_obama_vs_republican_candidates.html
One thing to remember is in the U.S., presidential elections are based on the electoral college, so each state usually votes as a unit. So the overall polls matter less than the polls in the "swing states", which are undecided between the candidates. This means that the candidate who gets the most votes could lose the election - this has happened occasionally in the past. Tennessee where I live is a Republican state, so the Republican candidate is almost sure to win Tennessee and all of Tennessee's votes will go to him, so my vote does not really count. The candidates will probably not campaign here, instead they will focus on the swing states where the vote is "up for grabs". This is not a good system in my opinion, but I don't think it will change anytime soon.
