I am warming my hands on the fir OR by the fire. #1 (permalink) Mon Feb 06, 2012 16:32 pm   I am warming my hands on the fir OR by the fire.

Hi teachers,

1) A and B are playing badminton on the street. The shuttlecock goes to a neighbour's house when they mishit it and it is locked.
A: Where's the shuttlecock?
B: It is in the neighbour's house.
A: Lift this small boy up and leave him on the wall and ask him to jump and fetch the shuttlecock.

2) In Pakistan, we people have something round and we put some small logs in to make a fire so how to say? I am warming my hands on the fir OR by the fire.

3) We pray. We curse. The opposite of "pray" is curse?

Many thanks in advance.

A and B are playing badminton on the street. The shuttlecock flies into a neighbour's garden when it is mis-hit and the gate to the proerty is locked.
A) Where's the shuttlecock?
b) It is in the neighbour's garden.
A) Lift this small boy up and sit him on the wall, then ask him to jump and fetch the shuttlecock.

This seems a little cruel to small boys. How is he supposed to get back out of the neighbour's property?

Both prepositions are acceptable - no one thinks that you are actually touching the flames if you use 'on'.

The opposite of 'curse' is 'bless'.
I don't think there's a direct opposite of 'pray' - you would have to say 'We do not pray'.

So "make him sit" is incorrect with "sit", right?

I am warming my hands on the fire. OR I am warming my hands by the fire. Both are correct but which one is more often used?

Also, "It flew into their house." Correct?

Thank you very much, Madam BN.

No, there's nothing wrong with use of 'make him sit'. It simply doesn't work well in this context. It implies a force being used on the child.

'by'

Not really - unless it entered their house through a door or window.
If it only landed inside their property, but not inside the building, then 'garden', 'yard', 'lawn' or similar would be preferable.
