"In short we are in a position not unlike the one we faced in Vietnam." How does the phrase - 'not unlike' join the sentence? Please explain the grammar points involved. Thanks.

In full it means "we are in a position that is not unlike the one..." "unlike" is a preposition, negated by "not".
