Hi teachers,

1) Playing cricket is one of my favourite interests, likes, activities, pursuits, pastimes, avocations, recreation or hobbies. Can I use any with no change in meaning? If not, please give some simple examples so that I can understand it. Thank you for your time.

2) A came back to work after a long time. His friend B asks him some questions:
B: You came back after a long time.
A: Yes, I was ill.
B: How was the tone of your boss when he spoke to you today's morning? Correct?
A: His tone was full of anger. Correct?

Many thanks in advance.

1) You cannot say 'one of my favourite recreation'. Also, 'avocation' has a slight difference in meaning because it can suggest that the hobby might get in the way of your paid employment. Other than that the meaning don't change.

2) 'Today's morning' is incorrect. It should be either 'this morning' or 'today'.
Although it's not incorrect, use of 'the tone of...' and 'his tone was' sounds very stiff and stilted.
I suggest that this would be more natural:
How did your boss sound when he spoke to you this morning?
He sounded angry.

Thank you, Madam BN. :)

Playing cricket is one of my favourite interests.
Fishing is one of my favourite likes.
Hunting of wild rabbits is one of my favourite activities.
Keeping fighting roosters is one of my favourite pursuits.
Planting flowers in flowerpots is one of my favourite pastimes.
Knitting is one my favourite hobbies.

Are the above-mentioned sentences correct?

'Fishing is one of my favourite likes' needs some work to make it sound a little more natural.
Generally 'favourite' and 'likes' are not combined.
