A lot of young people get tired of living, too. There are so many suicides, and even more attempted ones that failed. Depression knows no age.

We are going to age unless we die beforehand. So, the best we can do is to try and age well.

There is a wide variety of ageing. We can say the proverb: Man proposes, god disposes. I have no problem for the time being with my age. I could already survive very grave illnesses. My doctors call me a "miracle" and tell me with joke "you are indestructible."

But my contemporaries. You couldn't imagine what we have to experience. One of my best friends who was a famous writer and really a good writer, a man whose intelligence was something quite inconceivable, who used his brain from dawn till nigh (this is allegedly it is very good against the Alzheimer's disease) he began to became forgetful, and this incredibly clever man lost all his memory. When he died he didn't recognize anybody.

I think that SOME men really DO age better than women -- provided that they put a little effort into it: try to stay slender, exercise, get sufficient sleep, etc.
You can notice it in the world of motion pictures. Some male actors do actually get more "distinguished" as they age. And they continue to get roles. On the other hand, female actors (they do not like the word "actress") often find it hard getting roles as they age. And the poor darlings have to starve themselves in order to stay slim and have to undergo all kinds of terrible surgical procedures to keep the wrinkles away from their faces. It really is unfair. But as the saying goes, that's life. |

I think if the mind remains creative the wrinkles don't disfigure either women or men. For example look at Picasso, Einstein, Madame Curie or Marie Curie (with two Nobel prizes) Albert Szentgyörgyi, ( discoverer of C vitamin, Nobel prize) Ágnes Heller(philosopher)etc.
If an actress/actor's considers her profession most important than her appearance she remains beautiful and they could perform the role of the old characters. Than Marlene Dietrich, Simone Signoret, Audrey Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman, etc I can't enumerate Hungarian ones as you can't know them.
Men: Spencer Tracy, Jean Gabin, Humphry Bogart, Gregory Peck, Donald Sutherland, Yves Montand etc.
This rule applies to every people not only the famous ones. There is a saying what is true. After 40 everybody is responsible for his/her appearance or for his/her FACE. _________________ We always deceive ourselves twice about the people we love - first to their advantage, then to their disadvantage. |

Yes, and SOME women DO age better than men -- if they do the same thing.

Sorry, but if men don't "starve" to stay slim, they get fat as well. And they don't have the excuse of their body storing more fat than the opposite sex for childbearing reasons.
Staying in shape and looking good takes a bit of work (and fun, if you LIKE watching your diet and doing exercise) for both men AND women.
But what makes a person truly beautiful is a friendly, positive attitude. Laughing is the best medicine, but also a beauty potion that actually works!

Only three quotes about "the happiness that helps us laughing."
1.Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be. ~Abraham Lincoln
2.Happiness? That's nothing more than health and a poor memory. ~Albert Schweitzer
3.Happiness is not an ideal of reason, but of imagination. ~Immanuel Kant
I agree with the first, the other two are interesting.
But I think when the people try to make up their minds to be, they are not in the state of laughing rather they are sunk in their thoughts. _________________ We always deceive ourselves twice about the people we love - first to their advantage, then to their disadvantage. |

I totally agree with you there, Kati. If you have to contemplate upon something, it is not spontaneous, but brought on deliberately. Happiness, in my view, is spontaneous and a feeling. It just happens. Deciding to be something is using your thought, and that is neither spontaneous, nor a feeling.

Oh, sure, being in good health and forgetting about all the bad stuff can make you happy. But is it happiness? I don't think so. Often, it is a memory that brings a smile to your face. And the bad moments in your life were obstacles that you've mastered, lessons you've been taught and a grindstone that helped you shape your personality.

Kant is half right. Happiness is indeed not an ideal of reason, but it is also not necessarily an ideal of the imagination. If you just imagine to be happy, you are not really happy, it is just an illusion. But we often get happy, and that happiness is not just some delusion, but very real.
Perhaps these well-known men were just melancholic about happiness being so fleeting. It comes and goes--and that's what makes it good.

I was looking for a beautiful quote from Walt Whitman about the old age. I didn't find it. But I found this, it isn't another beautiful what I would like to share with you. Here it is: "Do you know that Old Age may come after you with equal grace, force, fascination?" (Walt Whitman) This is also good but not this theme -this is a present to you: "I no doubt deserved my enemies, but I don't believe I deserved my friends." Hello Claudia,
I've found Walt Whitman's poem what I had been looking for.
Beautiful Women
WOMEN sit, or move to and fro--some old, some young; The young are beautiful--but the old are more beautiful than the young.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
(Incredible thought! But if I want I can understand.)

Hello
I used to believe that women age better than men because women take care of their skin more than men do. Most of the times women do not drink, smoke or stay out on the sun like men usually are. Therefore, women have a better chance of preserving their skin. I found some information on the internet that men age better than women because the following reasons. 1. Men exfoliate their skin on the regular basis when they shave. 2. We all know that sebaceous gland produce oil and keep skin moist and plump. Testosterone stimulates more sebaceous gland to produce sebum. Therefore, the male skin becomes moist and tick. The moisture and thickness of the skin will delay the skin from becoming wrinkles. It also prevents from external damage. We know that most men do not use a facial moisturizer as compare to female. It may be that is one of the reasons. 3. Men skin is generally 20%ticker than women, and they sweat more. Sweating is a good way of getting rid of toxins and keeps the skin clean. On the other hand, as women age or slowly get to menopause, the estrogen level will be decrease. Therefore, less sebum will be produce. This causes the skin to become thinner and more wrinkles. I hate to admit it but with the salt and paper and the laughing line, men age better. However, with all this information provided, I still believe that women age better because they are more active than ever before, they get treatment for the hormonal imbalance issues, they eat healthy, and in general, they appear much prettier and age better.
Thank you. |

Hello,
I didn't understand this question? I don't care about ageing. This is a natural process.Who says a man or a woman become ugly when he/she has wrinkles. I think the wrinkles are not ugly but they can be beautiful;; it depends on whose face you can see them. As the face is the mirror of the soul, the mind, these wrinkles can be beautiful.
I think there is a greater problem why the men die earlier than the women??? In the last two years we lost 14 friends and 13 were men and 1 was woman. This is the truth. _________________ We always deceive ourselves twice about the people we love - first to their advantage, then to their disadvantage. |

Why, that's easy: 'cause men are stronger but women are tougher! :-P
Apparently, women also have superior immune systems: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/8793301/Women-found-to-be-the-tougher-sex.html _________________ Just remember... if the world didn't suck, we'd all fall off! |
