All parents should be required to volunteer time to their children's schools. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.
I agree that parents should be volunteers in their children’s school, because it is good for all members who are involved in the process of education—the schools, students and their parents. However, there is an assumption in the author’s statement. The schools should not allow the parents to do the work which is the core of education, because the parents are not the professional educators. Otherwise, it will undermine the quality of education.
Firstly, the schools can get benefit from the parents’ volunteer time, because it help the school to save the expenditure on education. For example, the volunteer parents can guide the students when they are having lunch in the school. Or they can help the teachers of the school to ensure the safety of their students when they are in a park trip. So the schools don’t have to employ extra ones to guide their students, which encourage them to spend their money on educational researches.
Secondly, we all know that parents’ abilities of teaching have a big affluence on the growth of their children. Having volunteer time in school can help the parents to learn the methods and skills of education. For the work that I just have mentioned such as guiding the students, they can learn how to make the students in order. Besides, the educators such as teachers in the schools can help them if they cannot control the situation. So the parents can learn more quickly than doing this in their homes.
however, the further participating in education of parents may lead to sides effects opposing the statement’s goal. when the parents join the process of education in the schools such as teaching in the classes, there may be a risk that they will reduce the quality of the education because they are not the educational experts. For example, if the schools allow a parent who has little relevant experience and knowledge to teach the math in the class, the students may be more confused about math. Or a parent who teaches PE outside class may bring potential dangers to the students’ bodies because she/he has not a teaching profession.
But someone may say that the process of teaching can help parents learn more about the skill of teaching. I concede that it is true that parents can learn more from that, but it needs a long time to acquire. Besides, it may need lots of guides of the educators, which may cost more resource in the schools. So balancing benefits and cost, too further practicing is not a good choice for both of the schools and parents.
In conclusion, the parents should take part in the educational processes in their children’s school, because it can lead to win-win situation to the parents and schools. However, the school should be careful when they assign the work to the parents, because the too professional work may be not suitable for parents. |
