shall after an if-clause #1 (permalink) Sat Feb 11, 2012 18:55 pm   shall after an if-clause

Hello everyone,

Can I use 'shall' after an if-clause in sentences as follows:

If the President, for whatever reason, is unable to perform his duties, the Parliament shall call elections of the President no later than...

I mean "shall" as used in legal documents, not "shall" expressing the future tense.

Thank you.

That's absolutely fine, though 'elections of the President' is incorrect. You probably mean 'elections for the Presidency'.

Thank you, Beesneees.

As for "elections of the President", I have seen this phrase used by English lawyer William Butler
http://books.google.ru/books?id=O25CYjNsJvgC&pg=PA31&dq=%22elections+of+the+president%22&hl=ru&sa=X&ei=ubY2T6vuLuKg4gT-r_GfDA&ved=0CEoQ6AEwBTgK#v=onepage&q=%22elections%20of%20the%20president%22&f=false

and in some native sources
http://books.google.ru/books?id=Xq0SAAAAMAAJ&q=%22elections+of+the+president+of%22&dq=%22elections+of+the+president+of%22&hl=ru&sa=X&ei=W7g2T8_GO8T24QSgkuWaDA&ved=0CDIQ6AEwAThk
Iowa journal of history: Том 17
Formal elections of the President of the Council and Senate during the period prior to 1857 varied somewhat

By the way, what about "election of the President"?

Your first link appears to be in Russian.

The second example does not use 'elections of the President' in the way you have used it.

The election of the president - reference to the the election procedure in general.
The election for the president of the company - an election called to decide upon a new president.

Thank you again, Beeesneees.

I have to admit I'm not sure what you mean by saying, "first link appears to be in Russian".

If you meant that it is a translation from Russian, yes, it is a translation, but a translation by a native English speaker (William Elliott Butler, Vinogradoff Institute (University College, London)).

Could such usage (elections of the President) be a "tradition" when translating Russian legal text?
Here is a link to a translation made by Joseph Laurence Black:

The first link you provided appeared in my browser as a Russian web page (written in Russian).

No, I don't think it's down to such a tradition, I think it's down to the usage of 'election of a president' and 'election for a president' as I explained earlier.

The usage in the examples provided and the usage in your initial sentence is different.
