Meaning of Substitute Wed May 24, 2006 7:40 am  Meaning of Substitute

Hi everybody

It just occured to me that I confuse the word SUBSTITUTE.

1, He substituted the word GOOD for NICE in his essay.

(which word did he use?)

2, Tea was substituted for coffee at the party.

(what was taken at the party)

3, The beautiful sofa was substituted for an ugly chair in
the room.

Is substitute WITH correct? Or always FOR?

Thanks in advance

Tom

Originally was "good" then it was changed to "nice"The same parallel in the other sentences."Substitute" is used with the preposition "for"

Hi Tom

My answers are in blue.

Sentence 3 is passive, so theoretically you could change the word "for" to the word "by" but then the meaning would change completely! "The beautiful sofa was substituted by an ugly chair" would mean the same as "The beautiful sofa was replaced by an ugly chair." (i.e., there is now an ugly chair in the room.)
