Hi everybody
It just occured to me that I confuse the word SUBSTITUTE.
1, He substituted the word GOOD for NICE in his essay.
(which word did he use?) He used the word "good".
2, Tea was substituted for coffee at the party.
(what was taken at the party) They had tea.
3, The beautiful sofa was substituted for an ugly chair in the room. (Thank goodness!)
Is substitute WITH correct? No. Or always FOR? Yes.
Thanks in advance

Hi Tom
My answers are in blue.
Sentence 3 is passive, so theoretically you could change the word "for" to the word "by" but then the meaning would change completely! "The beautiful sofa was substituted by an ugly chair" would mean the same as "The beautiful sofa was replaced by an ugly chair." (i.e., there is now an ugly chair in the room.)
