Hi abbildung,
ETS doesn't seem to say anything regarding your question, I'll keep asking around though. What's more important is what you can do to achieve the required score. When are you going to take the TOEFL? How are you preparing for the exam? Talk to you soon, Torsten _________________ Test Of English for International Communication TOEIC Preparation & TOEIC Vocabulary |

Hi again abbildung,
I know that you can take the TOEIC (which is also administered by ETS) as often as you want. However, the question is will you be able to raise your score significantly within a short period of time. You should always ask yourself, how important is that particular score is to you and how it influences your current situation. I assume you need a TOEFL score because you want to study in the US? Also, have you thought of alternatives to the TOEFL? As far as I know a lot of universities and colleges in North America (and now also Europe) allow applicants to use the TOEIC instead of the TOEFL. To answer your question, there are a number of things you can do to practice your speaking and writing skills:
- listen to authentic audio materials and repeat phrases (that is what you do when you learn to speak a language anyway)
- read texts and dialogues aloud
- record your own voice and analyze it
- write a short essay and post it here for review
In addition we can try and arrange one-to-one speaking sessions with a native speaker (over Skype of phone).
Let me know what you think,

Hello again Torsten,
i want to study computer science on a german university and therefore i have to pass the toefl with approximately 80 points. im really not sure if my current english skill is enough to get such a score. it would be really frustrating for me if i couldnt start my study just because of insufficient english skills.
the next days i'll try to finish reading the toefl book. furthermore i will follow your advicse and write some essays and post it here on the forum so u can correct my errors.
until then flo |

The TOEFL
HOW OFTEN CAN I TAKE THE COMPUTER-BASED TOEFL TEST?. IF I CANCEL MY SCORE, CAN I TAKE THE TEST AGAIN? TOEFL policy states that you may take the CBT TOEFL test only once in any calendar month even if you took the test and canceled your scores. For example, if you test in July, you must wait until August to take it again. If you test more that once in a calendar month, your new score will not be reported and your test fee will not be refunded. Violation of this policy may also result in additional action being taken. Effective January 1st. 2002 the TOEFL can only be taken a maximum of five times per calendar year. WHICH SCORE WILL A SCHOOL USE FOR DETERMINING ACCEPTANCES? Schools will take your, highest score. There is no penalty for taking the test more than once. HOW LONG IS A TOEFL SCORE VALID? Most institutes require the TOEFL to be no more than two years old. |
