Expression: thesaurus after thesaurus Sat May 27, 2006 8:23 am  Expression: thesaurus after thesaurus

Hello everybody

Is the given expression correct? If so, why the word THESAURUS is being treated as uncountable? I mean no article before it. I would like to see one more sentence formed like this, please.

1- He opened thesaurus after thesaurus but could not find
the appropriate synonym for the word.

Thanks in advance

Hi Tom

"noun after noun" = "a lot of nouns"

That's a standard way to emphasize that you're talking about many of something instead of using "many" or "a lot of" and the plural form of the noun).

The woman tried on dress after dress but couldn't find one she liked.

Tom asks question after question.

I am grateful,Amy------a lot of thanks.

If I substitute WANT for LIKE, would there be THE before ONE. For example, "...could not find the one she wanted."

Hi Tom

That could be a philosophical question. As a woman, I might want all of the dresses Laughing, but if none of them looks good on me, then I don't like any them. (Just a little joke...Wink)

Strictly grammatically spreaking, yes, you could say "the one she wanted".
