fast (adjective and/or adverb)

Just to add to that, 'fast' can also be a verb meaning 'to abstain from food' and a noun . The word 'breakfast ' means to ' break one's ( overnight ) fast '.

Hello Vera,

You might like to work through the lessons about the definite and indefinite articles here:
http://www.english-test.net/lessons/16/index.html

If, when you are working through them, you have any specific questions, then please ask.
When you have finished, looking at the rules, you could try including a/an in some sentences of your own and post them. Then we can work on any misunderstandings.

When we say 'It is thing', we mean 'It is the word thing'. Which means that a noun refers to the name of a thing not to the thing itself.

It's clear enough, Conchita. Lovely.
