I might interpret the sentence this way:

It's good to set goals and to work toward achieving them, but you should be flexible in how you achieve them.


A detour is an alternative route to a destination. It's almost always longer than the planned or direct route, but often much more interesting.

Your quote reminds me a bit of the expression:
"All roads lead to Rome."

You could say: Having a plan is good as long as that doesn't stop you from being flexible.
