Hi Freeman, what university do you want to study at? What are the requirements (do they require you to take the TOEFL?) If you want to take an exam that you will pass for sure -- go for the TOEIC because you can't fail it. Regards Torsten

Hi Freeman, for a description of the TOEFL you can take a look at this: http://www.english-test.net/articles/65/index.html
The TOEFL contains very specific language questions which makes it easier to prepare for it than for the IELTS. There are more preparation materials available for the TOEFL than for the IELTS, the TOEFL is more widely recognized that than the IELTS and the TOEFL is computer based with makes the registration process much easier for you. So, if you want my opinion, go for the TOEFL. You can start by learning the most frequently TOEFL vocabulary words here: http://www.english-test.net/toefl/index.html#word

Hi Torsten,
I'm thinking of taking either TOEFL or IELTS test around middle of Jan/2010 since I need to result at the end of Jan/2010 and also the tests' schedule don't give me more options to select... According to each test's format, I would think IELTS is easier than TOEFL due to the TOEFL's integrated test parts which requires the integration of 4 skills. Also the TOEFL's vocabulary is very tough... I would say it's much more difficult than TOEIC's.
In addition, the IELTS's speaking is a face-to-face interview which would make test takers feel more comfortable.
But still, I'd like to hear your "new" comments on this. _________________ Thank you very much,

Hi all,
Due to the limited options of the tests' schedule, I must take the IELTS test instead of TOEFL which I'm a little more familiar. Can someone advice me the difference between these two tests in term of the languages, the preparation?
Please share your knowledge. I really appreciate any help! _________________ Thank you very much,

Hi, as for the exam I'd choose IELTS which I consider better than TOEFL, in particular because it offers an oral exam with a face to face conversation instead of a computer. Now IELTS is generally accepted all over USA (it was not like that in the start) and it's still more popular than TOEFL in other countries such as UK and Australia (since it's managed by British Council, University of Cambridge and IDP). The rest? TOEFL is not bad at all, the point is that for me IELTS is better, it seems to me more professional (I got both and saw the difference) |

| I took the TOEFL test on July 23, 2010. Today, it is August 28, 2010 and I still didn't receive my paper score. Normally, the scores arrive in 28 days, so probably my score is lost. The reason is TOEFL sends the paper scores via insecure mailing service instead of a registered mail (which proof of delivery is mailed to the sender). Although, the scores are very important, the customer service doesn't assist you effectively. if you try to tell your problem to the customer service via e-mail, they answer you with almost automated responses without taking your e-mails into consideration and replying your e-mail can take 3-4 business days. They charge you 17$ to send the scores again. Even though you indicate that the situation is urgent, they say "it takes 7 business days to mail the scores". Moreover, they say "delivery can take up to 4 weeks for international mail delivery". I need the TOEFL test for student visa application and now, I may miss it and this will cause me to lose my chance to pursue my education in a very reputable university in UK. I regret not to take IELTS instead of TOEFL IBT. |

oh, I'm so sorry about your situation However, in my case, I took the TOEFL on Aug 14, 2010 and received my score via my account of ETS website (and also via my email) on Aug 26, 2010, about 12 days I don't know why your situation happened, but I think the TOEFL score is sent immediately and conveniently |

| As far as I know, TOEFL iBT scores are sent electronically to schools and most of the schools don't require the hard-copy which is sent to the test-taker. |

| The university accepted my web score by confirming it with my TOEFL registration number, but the UK Consulate doesn't accept web score, and require paper score for student visa. The problem is delivery of paper score. I am still waiting them to solve my problem. But although it has been 1 week since I first conducted to their customer service, they are still unwilling to solve my problem and they don't care loss of my right for the master degree. |

| I am very sorry to hear that. It's very strange that the consulate doesn't accept the university admission without checking the TOEFL score himself. By the way, if you had decided to apply for British universities, why wouldn't you've taken IELTS at first? |
