Hello everybody

The novel "WOMAN IN LOVE" starts:

" If the machinery of the Law could be depended on to fathom every case of suspicion, and to conduct every process of inquiry, with moderate assistance only from the lubricating influences of oil of gold, the events which fill these pages might have claimed their share of the public attention in a Court of Justice."

I understand nothing

Please explain in simple English, please

And many thanks

Tom

If you could depend on the legal system to get to the bottom of every case of suspicion, conduct every investigation, with only a little help from bribery to make things move faster, then the story in this book would have gone to court and received public attention.

This is really a tough book you're reading. I'll bet only 10 percent of American high school students would be able to read it. :x
