Hi Michael! Hi, Amy!
Good morning all!

Quote:
As your husband is a Formula 1-fan your TV might run every saturday and sunday in the summer.
:) This summer I expected to have (and was slightly worried about) the conflict of their interests, but (thanks, Formula-1 organizers :) ) they located the summer race not in Europe, but in different time zone . Very wise! :) :D

Quote:
Russian ponies must be resistant against pain, as the pony in your song probably will have got strong stomache aches after feeding the doughnut.

No, no, no. Don't worry :)
It’s all right with that pony’s stomach, as the main idea of the song is that each time when the boy comes the pony refuses a doughnut (= i.e. the idea of being just a decorative horse, a toy), because its/his/her :) thoughts are occupied by a dream of becoming a ‘true’ horse – to take part in a true chase, to save life of a dashing horseman, etc.

Diminutival & endearment suffixes in different languages is an interested topic, as they reflect a culture. It’s very interesting to compare.

For example, in Russian a diminutive from ‘fish’ is widely used (рыбка) – you can say it to a beloved girl, but in English they don’t have an endearing derivation from ‘fish’. Only ‘old trout’. :D

As I know, the Italian language is one of the most subtle and refined concerning to such suffixes (come from Latin). pupa – pupilla, etc.

…Monday morning… and it’s time to go… to put the harness on my ‘horses’ :)

See you,
Tamara

Horses #156 (permalink) Wed Jul 12, 2006 17:49 pm   Horses

Hi Michael! :)

There is also a lot of songs and other pieces of poetry in which human life is compared to galloping horses that, sometimes, bolt you… tooooo fast…. :) :( :) :(...

(Wishing you
to have a sure hand and
to keep (the) saddle, [= pull leather (AmEngl) ?],
to gallop your horses and
to hold your horses, when needed ;)
and get into the saddle - time and again :D
...)
:)

Hi Tamara!

Sorry, I wonder whether there is or there are a lot of songs and..... :? I?m a bit curious whether the expression there is refers to a lot or to songs?

Thanks for your good wishes, you must had had this thoughts on Saturday yet. As my friend (and teacher in horse-coaching) and I tried to move his horses (Arabs too) in the late afternoon (6 p.m.). Hardly half a mile from the stable a flock of stable flies offended our horses and the poor creatures weren?t capable to defend themselves. So they shook their heads and tried to escape and the sure hand only that to have I?ve learnt from my friend made sure that our horses not really did loose the nerves. So we could stay in the saddle (on the carriage) and I were able to guide them back to the stable. But it was high time that we reached there back again. In the midst we stopped several times to kill the stable flies but it seemed nearly impossible to make it a bit more comfortable for our horses, as if we killed one fly there seemed to reach us two others.

What about you? Are you offended by this punishment of god too?

See you

Michael

Hi Michael!

Yes, you’re right: ‘there are a lotis a lot better :)

What about you? Are you…

As I have no Arab, nor other horses (only my Great Dane; her height-at-the-shoulder is 74cm only (she is a ‘pony horse’ :)), but she is almost a stone heavier than me, as I myself am a ‘pony woman’ of petite size :) ).

And so, I apply the above 'horse idioms' in their indirect sense. Quite often… as my life is full of pits and bumps and I’m rather an impatient horsewoman. :)

Oh, thanks goodness! If you had sprained some of your fingers riding your horse, how could I ask you to keep them crossed tomorrow, for a whole hour (1-2 p.m.) – when all sane people will have their Saturday’s lunch or ride their horses, but I’ll have my Adult Literacy exam (Saturday is rather a strange day for taking exams, isn’t it?, but it's an additional, the last summer exam for such latecomers, as me :))

Keep your fingers safe :)
See you,
Tamara

Hi Tamara!

I see we have something in common. Both of us have a pet which is almost a stone havier than ourselves! I don?t mind about that as I know that there is a well known German coachman who is definitely a stone havier than one of his horses.

There is a saying in the horseman-scene: Power depends on Patience. That means if you try to compare your power with that of your horse you probably lose this contest as horses are capable do achieve 25-35 horsepowers for the moment. Only if you are patient and kind but sure your horse will follow you closely. Possibly that works in other areas of life too. 8)

Fortunately, my fingers are not sprained. So I?ll keep them crossed tomorrow from 12.55 p.m. to 2.05 p.m. and hope not to get a spasm as I probably will ride our horses in the late evening again, if possible. :D

Keeping my fingers safe and crossed for you tomorrow. Although I think that you don?t need that, have a Good Luck with your exam!

If he likes beer, he stands a good chance to extend the lead. Since he can't ride the pet anyway.

(By the way, one time, in Russian winter, I had a try to harness my Great Dane in a sled(ge) to drive my son oversnow (for fun only, of course) - but she decidedly rejected the idea :)
Even though she really loves him (and always stays to sleep with him all the night, when he is unwell).

That’s the truth pure and simple…

Hopefully, I’ll able to be patient enough (to have brains on ice :D) - to cope with all those tricky questions ‘what’s the main intention (or the purpose) of the author of the text’, ‘what style of writing…’, ‘the most appropriate sub-headings’ and the like…

Michael, thank you for you warm support... When (if :) ) I get the language certificate I’ll scan it and e-mail it to you, because a part of it is yours :)

…It’s time to make all [my horses :)] ready.
See you,
Tamara

Debriefing :) #161 (permalink) Sat Jul 15, 2006 19:34 pm   Debriefing :)

Hi!

Today’s test was rather difficult (5 out of 8 its texts, with their correspondent questions, were from areas, little known for me).
But, at least, I've managed to have worked them all against time. :)

One question definitely had two right answers at once :)
I wasn’t able to choose the 'most right’ and just did 'random selection' between them. :)

The exam results will be known only in three weeks. So… now it’s a good time just to relax :)

It must be such a relief to have it behind you! I'm glad for you and am sure you've done great!

Thank you! How would I do without you all !
Certainly, my being in the forum is not only a point of ‘learning English’. And I hope, you do feel it.

Conchita, I’ve never heard the expression and my dictionaries don’t give clear explanation (at early Sunday morning :) ).
Does it means ‘in the heart of summer’ (midsummer) or when the summer starts ‘wearing away’ (dead)?

See you,
Tamara
