I wouldn't worry about the preposition at the end of the sentence - it's certainly not formal. Formal is often when you put it at the beginning.

Oops… Alan, thank you.
Alas… This only means that, as it happens quite often, I’ve mixed it up, turning things upside down. and breaking the order Smile

Hopefully, now I’ll remember that better... Smile

By the way, I’ve found a quite funny link about the first part of the Churchill’s original phrase:

Maybe someone also finds it interesting to read. Smile

Exactly the same in Russian. (I admit that it possibly came to Russia from Germany. As many other similar Russian and German sayings.)

But I have to go… (to maintain my small-but-busy mill Smile )
See you all,

Hi Amy,

It’s me again. Smile Thank you for your response.

Going back to the Michael sentence Smile and the two (previous-page) amendments...
Could you say is there any difference between using 'did... get' (Alan’s variant) and 'do... have' (your variant) in this case?

I have a vague feeling that - generally - such a use of Present / Past tense would slightly change the meaning (putting emphasis on a bit different aspects), but I myself cannot catch it clearly…

Or not?

Where did you get your knowledge of German from?
Where do you have your knowledge of the German language from?

By the way, I can also say that just now, when I’m writing the text, Microsoft Word (with its built-in 'general rules') is quite displeased with both sentences, disapproving prepositions-in-the-end and strongly recommending to me to remove from at all Smile
Despite the Churchill’s phrase I’ve fed to it - twice. Smile

Hi Tamara,

Some points I'd like to raise. Could this interesting discussion be moved to another forum such as What do you want to talk about? or English vocabulary ... as I think it might get lost in this forum. But as we're here, I'll refer to your point about Microsoft Word and dare to disagree with it. Incidentally it won't even accept my surname Townend and insists it should be Townsend!

Back to your point about where do you and where did you? If I asked Where do you get? it would suggest to me that this acquistion is very recent and that it's something you found in a book the other day. Where did you? puts the question seriously in the past, which to me makes better sense because acquisition of a language usually goes back some way.

Ah! That's that. Now I see.
Thank you, Alan.

Oh, yes... MS Word puts a great value to its vocabulary. There are lots and lots of funny examples – especially with surnames. Smile

Reminded to the famous Rock Band the "Who" Fri Aug 18, 2006 22:27 pm  Reminded to the famous Rock Band the "Who"

Hi Alan!

Now, I feel needed to defend the Microsoft Word. Since first, when I?ve read your surname I felt reminded to the lead-guitar-player Pete Townshend. What a name in the formerly rock-scene and surely in the nowadays music-scene.

Googeling the word Townsend I found some advice to the American Townsend-Mountains, a great area in the Rocky Mountains.

As you are one of the founders of this site and still ( after three years have passed by) are buisy here and always are trustworthy, would you feel anoyed if I think about you as Alan, "the Rock", Townend?

Hi Tamara! Old eagle eye! Wink

Thank you for best wishes and patiently correcting my mistakes. You see the page turned round, now you always must correct me!! Wink

But now, I have to leave the site as I?m needed to prepare for the Big Do. You know: Cleaning the nails, brushing the teeth and cutting the hair and so on...... Although, likely after two hours nobody is capable to recognize the other. But the first view is deciding! Laughing Laughing

Tamara, could you please take my buisy-cards from the Sunday-School for me? Rolling Eyes

Have a nice weekend, too.

Hi Tamara!

Tank you! I?m feeling fine. Like you recognized most of my brothers in arms are old dogs and because of that the recent drinking-contest during the celebration wasn?t that hard I expected-thanks God-, so I?m able to visit the current Sunday-School! Very Happy

Tamara, sorry, I didn?t use the word Old in the sense of age but in the sense of trust and reliance -considerring you a rock in the stormy breakers of grammatical mistakes and errors beside your sympatical being- and hope you can accept this explanation? Rolling Eyes

Embarassed I did that before I?ve read this post. Now I dread having stepped into the -at least in Germany well known-scale of grease. Wink
