Hi,

The trouble with 'fetch' is that , so I have been told, it's not used in American English the same way as it is used in British English. I'll let our American cousins sort that one out. I know 'fetch' to mean - go to a place and bring someone back with you or as someone has just said 'pick up' as an alternative to 'fetch'. I think Torsten found the use of 'take' as in 'take someone from the station' odd because this could mean that they didn't want to come and they were in a way forcibly 'taken'. In this situation I would use either 'fetch from' or pick up from' or indeed 'collect from'.

Alan

By the way this problem is now growing whiskers because it's been around on the forum some time!

Fetch means collect and bring back #94 (permalink) Wed Jun 23, 2010 22:21 pm   Fetch means collect and bring back

Hi Torsten,

in your answer to Janna you write "when you fetch somebody from the station you collect THEM from there". But is not correct to say "...you collect HIM from there"?

Many thanks,
Francesco

'Them' is a pronoun which is acceptable for use in the singular when it's not clear whether they are male or female.

Hello Jordano,

The word is fetch, not fletch.
Fletching is the art of attaching feathers to the rear of arrows so that they will fly correctly.

How much will your house fetch? ...here it does't mean ((to go for and bring somebody back))..

Hello,
Thank Mr.Alan a lot. I think I can use correctly "take"and "fetch" now. I just used "take", but now I know the differance between these words.
