Hi Torsten,

After all these years I came to understand the difference between 'abbreviation and acronym' just now from your clear explanation.

How about HiFi (High Fidelity sound system) and WiFi (wireless local area networks) ..are they abbreviations or acronyms..?

Thank you very much.

thank you very much Mr.Torsten for your perfect explanation, acronym and abbreviation are so clear for me now.

for example; MIS is an abbreviation and ARAMCO is an acronym right?

MIS is stand for managment information system.
ARAMCO is stand for ARabian AMerican COmpany.

Dear Torsten!
Thanks for my next lesson. But I have a problem with acronyms and abbreviations. Both of them consist of the first letters of the group of words.I can't distinguish them! For example, should I read CET (Central European Time) or POV (privately owned vehicle) as acronyms or abbreviations?
Best regards.
Mila.

Hi Mila,

You are right. There a small number of abbreviations that could be read as acronyms but they aren't. Some of them are 'VIP' or 'CET'. I guess the only way to find out whether they are read as acronyms or abbreviations is to hear them being spoken by native speakers.

Let me know if this answers your question.
Many thanks,
Torsten

CET ...PET... #41 (permalink) Wed Feb 04, 2009 22:43 pm   CET ...PET...

Hi Torsten..

According to your suggestion, if 'CET' is an Abbreviation, then what about PET Polyethylene Terephthalate..? Is this an acronym or not..?

Hi Sahid,

PET is an abbreviation because it wouldn't make much sense to talk about a 'pet bottle', would it? So, you don't pronounce PET as a word but as an abbreviation.

I'm very glad to have learned this. Acronym and Abreviation are very common to me. But I smiled when i knew it. I've been using them interchangeably sometimes. now I know. God bless. thanks.
