Hello Eagle
In Pakistan and India many students and even some teachers use the verb 'pain' in this way, and that is basically wrong. You could substitute hurt for pain.
1- My head/ hand is hurting terribly.
The verb 'pain' needs an object. See below.
* It pains me to have to say this, but you no longer can be trusted.

Hi Eagle
The website you got the sentence from is located in the state of Washington (USA, west coast). So, assumedly, it was said by a native speaker of English.
I guess using pain this way might be used colloquially in some areas, but it sounds bad to me and is, as Tom said, not the "correct" way to use the word pain.

Thank you Amy and Tom very much for your explanations. I was really sure "pain" could not stand in that sentence.

Hi there, I agree that 'paining' is used incorrectly in that context, however, the word pain does have the present participle 'paining.' I'm actually unsure what that means, I was just playing around with Microsoft Encarta Dictionary and I stumbled across this. I always thought that paining was not a word so I Google'd it and here I am. If paining is a word, can some give me an example of it being used correctly?
Thanks, Pooven |

| I was furious to have lost a game of Scrabble today to someone using the word Paining and earning 48 points. The game was computerised and automatically tells you if a word is invalid but I have still never heard this word and cant imagine any way it would be used. |
