Some questions related to the newsletter (A funny thing...) Thu Jun 08, 2006 12:29 pm  Some questions related to the newsletter (A funny thing...)

Dear Alan
After having referred your newsletter which is topiced A funny thing happened at the forum, I've come across several questions and hope that it wouldn't be too late to ask you.
Firstly, can you explain to me in the third paragraph why you use ''THE OTHER PERSON'S instead of THE OTHER PEOPLE ''?
(...he should see the other person's point of view...)
Based on what I know, after "other" it should be compound nound, not singple noun right?
Secondly, what is the purpose of using this underline " _ " when you use to link two words together? E.g: figurative_expression
Eventually, I wish to express my gratitude to you and the piece of works, time which you've been donating to help us. It is really valuable, precious and great. I believe that our English knowdelge'll be improved dramatically in the nearly future.
By the way, Kelly is my English name and Tiet is my first name (in order to be easy to remember, I just created an account in yahoo which is named Kawaiitiet) . I am a Chinese Vietnamese, I discovered English-test website spontaneous when I was surffing on the internet, to be honest the benefits of this website in which have brought to us is beyond my expectancy. Therefore, I'm delighted to recommend the site to some of my friends who wish to learn English or who think that English is important for their future like me. What's a pity is that I don't have much time to log-in and submit my writing more regularly, that is the reason why my question postes are always later than the others. I hope that it won't disturb or bother you.
Anyway, just a few words to let you know I've got and read carefully your every newsletter.
As what you always say, see you next time.
Best regards,
Kawaiitiet

Hi Kawaiitiet,

You asked:

To me the other person's point of view sounds all right. I'm not quite sure which 'rule' you are referring to. On your other point I have looked at the newsletter and in my copy it says: this is only a figurative expression

Not much help to you I'm afraid. Can you give me more information?

Alan

Hi Tiet,

Do I understand you right --> You have been told that the word "other" must always be followed by a plural noun?

If that is in fact one of your questions, then I can tell you that is very often true, but there is no problem also using a singular noun, in particular when you are talking about two of something. For example:

There are two people in the room. One person is Amy and the other person is Kelly. Very Happy
