Hi,

If you use slice, you would have to know precisely what he had caught. From this sentence we don't know what it is, and so the more general word portion is best.

hi Alain ,

If he is helping I accept portion, otherwise a quantity fits more with adjectives like large or negligible

It's nothing at all to do with whether or not the dog was helping.

Hi,

'Helping' as a noun can be a portion of food. Is that what you mean, Nabil?

Ah yes, probably so. Can you also work out why he seems to think that 'a large quantity' is more acceptable than 'a large portion'?

Yes it’s a helping I was in hurry to see my girlfriend. Let me rewrite it.

If it is - helping- I accept -portion-, otherwise a quantity fits more with adjectives like large or negligible

No, sorry. No clearer. Why does 'a large quantity' fit better than 'a large portion'?
----EDIT----
I've given this some thought, and believe I now understand what you are indicating.
Fair enough - however that is a very long way away from the original question in this thread, which was to do with 'a helping of' something.
Can you not understand how your desire for wordplay would confuse a learner who wanted to know the answer to a specific question?
