Hi Tina,

This expression means that you do something that puts right all the problems that have happened before. Imagine if you like this situation: a young woman finds she can't get to the church to be married because all the roads are flooded and she can't get out of the house. The police hear about this problem and arrange for a helicopter to pick her up and take her to the church. In that way they have saved the day.

Try as I might, I just can't imagine the police doing such a thing in Spain, unless it was to save a life!!

'At the last minute' is what I normally say. Do you think the phrase is used with and without the article indistinctively or does one sound better than the other? Thank you.

What would be the answer to Conchita's question ? "...at last minute..." or "...at the
last minute..."?

Yeah, my dictionary supports the "at the last minute" version.

Maybe in the UK people use only "at last minute" :?:

Like Conchita, I would not omit the word 'the' in this case: at the last minute.

The omission of the word 'the' seems to be a typo here.

Vainly hoping the bride won't turn up after all (what with the flooded roads and all).

But he's in for a surprise (thanks to Alan's 'brilliant' helicopter idea)!

And I see that hope for the arrival of the word "the" was not in vain after all. It now turns up in the test. :D
