Hi,English Learner!
Yawn is a gape.People usually yawn when they want to sleep.
But call here is the synonym of shout

Hi

I don't think the sentence tells clearly who was in the kitchen. For example:

I heard him calling from the kitchen. (he could be in the kitchen--I could be in the kitchen)

Please shed some light on this one too.

.
'Come' is rather left hanging if the call did not come from the kitchen, Tom-- we don't know where they might 'come to'. Although semantically you are right that either is possible, common sense tells us the caller is in the kitchen and the hearer is elsewhere.

You see, someone is yawning in the kitchen because he/she is tired and maybe wanna sleep (or is feeling bored because we don't help his/her), so we should come to help them. To yawn is to open the mouth wide and inhale, when sleepy or bored.

But 'yawning' is not the correct answer, precisely because it wouldn't make much sense in the test sentence.
