Explanation of propinquity (noun)
closeness in time or place; closeness of relationship; resemblance

Sample of propinquity
The propinquity of the disasters put the community in chaos.
The propinquity of the two stories was the basis of the teacher's lesson.



   
Explanation of obloquy (noun)
widespread condemnation; disgrace or infamy resulting from this; public accusation; defamation

Sample of obloquy
The child suffered quite an obloquy at the hands of his classmates.
Lawyers must face frequent obloquy with their reputation as "ambulance chasers."



   
Explanation of oligarchy (noun)
form of government in which the supreme power is placed in the hands of a small, exclusive group

Sample of oligarchy
The oligarchy took control after the king was overthrown.



   
Explanation of antagonism (noun)
hostility; opposition; conflict

Sample of antagonism
The antagonism was created by a misunderstanding.
The rebellious clan captured a hostage to display antagonism to the new peace treaty.



   
Explanation of qualm (noun)
sudden feeling of uneasiness or doubt; regret; sorrow

Sample of qualm
His qualms about flying disappeared once the plane landed softly.



   
Explanation of debauchery (noun)
indulgence in one's appetites

The preacher decried debauchery and urged charity.



   
Explanation of chagrin (noun)
feeling of embarrassment due to failure or disappointment; humiliation

Sample of chagrin
To the chagrin of the inventor, the machine did not work.
She turned red-faced with chagrin when she learned that her son had been caught shoplifting.



   
Explanation of exultation (noun)
act of rejoicing; joy; gaiety; glee

Sample of exultation
Unpleasant and smelly as the operation was, she felt a surge of exultation when she cut the thread of the last suture and surveyed her unconscious patient.



   
Explanation of mite (noun)
very small sum of money; very small creature

Sample of mite
The mite they pay me is hardly worth the aggravation.
The baseball team was made up of such small children they were nicknamed the "Mites".



   
Explanation of antipathy (noun)
strong dislike or repugnance; aversion

Sample of antipathy
Her antipathy for large crowds convinced her to decline the invitation to the city.
The vegetarian had an antipathy toward meat.
