plausible, but deceptive; apparently, but not actually true; superficially attractive

Sample of specious
The jury forewoman said the jury saw through the defense lawyer's specious argument and convicted his client on the weight of the evidence.
I was unsure of the meaning of the specious statement.



   
Explanation of proverbial (adjective)
well-known because it is commonly referred to; similar to an adage

Sample of proverbial
King Solomon's proverbial wisdom has been admired through the ages.



   
Explanation of pensive (adjective)
thoughtful; contemplative; meditative; musing

Sample of pensive
She was in a pensive mood, just wanting to be alone to think.
My hours alone are often more pensive than the time I spend with friends.
The pensive mood was broken by a witty joke.



   
Explanation of connotative (adjective)
containing associated meanings in addition to the primary one; hinting; implicational; suggestive

Explanation of assiduous (adjective)
carefully attentive; diligent; persistent; hard-working

Sample of assiduous
It is necessary to be assiduous if a person wishes to make the most of his time at work.
He enjoys having assiduous employees because he can explain a procedure once and have it performed correctly every time.
