Introduction
Dear User,

As our site grows every day we want to share some information with you on the way we are operating the project. We call this section «Business Blog» as it is similar to doing a log book where data is recorded in a chronological order. «Blogging» is gaining popularity with more and more people picking up the habit of publishing their experiences and thoughts on the Internet. Our Blog covers various topics — from TOEFL, TOEIC, MBA, GMAT, ESL/EFL test preperation to cultural traditions and current political events.
There will also be some Internet marketing terminology and if you have any questions regarding the information simply let us know.

The Business Blog is written by Torsten Daerr and edited by Alan Townend.

2005 — February 26
English-test.net has been growing rapidly throughout February. If you are preparing for the TOEIC — the «Test of English for International Communication» you can now increase your active vocabulary by practising these exercises: TOEIC vocabulary tests. For those of you who are going to take the ASVAB — the «Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery», you might be interested in those vocabulary tests. Also, this month we have finally managed to move our website to a new server ensuring a higher level of reliability and availability. It's both interesting and pleasing to receive such positive feedback on our work as expressed by one of our users here. We look foward to meeting you online soon...

2005 — February 06
MCAT is an acronym (a word that has been formed from the initials of other words) and it stands for Medical College Admission Test. Now, if you want to study medicine or a related subject at a college or university in the US you have to take the MCAT which consists of five parts:

  • biology
  • general chemistry
  • organic chemistry
  • physics
  • verbal reasoning

Anne Neumann and Dr. Sarah Carney are currently working with us to create interactive vocabulary tests that help you learn and understand the terminology used in the MCAT. Here are the first tests and we will add more over the next few days:
MCAT vocabulary tests.

Both Anne and Sarah read our job ad and decided that this is a unique opportunity for them to convert their knowledge and expertise into money while at the same time gaining new experiences. You can do the same if you like. The beauty of our system is that unlike a traditional job it provides room for many contributors. As a matter of fact the benefits for each participant increase with the number of people who create word lists.
Yesterday Mark of Medan Education sent in his sample source file containing 10 headwords covering the topic of travel and of course you will soon be able to improve your vocabulary with even more tests. We are planning to add a batch of TOEIC word related exercises similar to the TOEFL tests by the end of next week so you should check back often.

2005 — January 27
You have now the opportunity to test and improve your knowledge of GMAT vocabulary words. Alan has written GMAT verbal test based on the GMAT verbal part and most of them are rather challenging. Alternatively you can check how many of the 1400 words contained in these GMAT verbal quizzes you know. Do you know the correct meaning of adjectives like «fallacious», «esoteric» or «inept»? What about nouns such as «nemesis», «enigma», «syllogism» and «oligarchy»? You obviously want to expand your vocabulary and you have seen new words in the right contexts and that's exactly what our tests are all about. Of course the GMAT consists of several parts and the verbal section is only one component but for many test candidates it presents an obstacle to learn so many new words in a short period of time. That's why we are here for you. Access our site as often as you like — we will add new vocabulary tests for you all the time. In addition we are offering assistance and training in essay writing as this is an essential element of the GMAT or the TOEFL too.

2005 — January 25
It has always been interesting to observe how new technologies change our language. Take the Internet. It has been giving birth to its own terminology. For example, the word «traffic» used to describe the movement of people or vehicles and in the online world it now measures the amount of users accessing the contents on a website. Yesterday english-test.net saw another record high in user traffic — our site was visited almost 4500 times within 24 hours. On August 14 of 2003 — one day before we launched our Business Blog — we received exactly 440 visits. Within one and a half years the popularity of english-test.net has increased more than 10 times and today we know that this is the beginning of the beginning. We are glad to have achieved this level of success because it gives us the opportunity to meet interesting people and learn about our students' needs. Of course we also exchange experiences and ideas with other ESL professionals such as Richard Flynn, one of the founders of UsingEnglish.com.
