Dear Friend,

It seems as if spring has arrived (those scattered snowflakes are a temporary appearance) with Easter waiting around the corner many of us are already making plans for their summer holidays. What about you? Do you know yet where you are going this year? If you go abroad you'll probably will get the opportunity to apply and practise your English communication skills. In our last class Siegfried spoke of Sweden and the way Swedish people learn languages. It's not so important that your English is flawless - it's more that by making an effort to communicate in a foreign language you show the other person that you respect them. Whenever I go to Poland I practise the few Polish phrases I know and their response is always the same: "Oh, pan bardzo dobrze mwi po-polsku!" which means: "Oh, you speak Polish very well." Imagine, how it would the other way round: A Pole comes to Germany and says three phrases in German. We expect them to master our language better than we do ourselves when they come to us.

Why is that?

Maybe, Michael can tell us his opinion on that question when he comes home from Australia for a holiday in April. He has been in "down under" for more than a year now(is that right, Michael?) and has made lots of new interesting friends from all over the world.

I wish you a good weekend with friendly people and lots of sunshine.

See you on Wednesday!
Torsten Daerr
