DescriptionTwo distinguished guests are travelling separately towards a ceremony where they will meet for the first time in three decades. Both are apprehensive as they review the successes and failures of their public lives, and their secret history. Humphrey and Ailsa met as children, by the grey northern sea to which they are returning. Humphrey was a serious child already, drawn towards the underwater world of marine biology, but there were as yet few signs of Ailsa's dazzling transformation into a flamboyant feminist celebrity. Through the evolution of their careers and their passionately entangled relationship, Margaret Drabble examines the ways in which place, chance, and time merge to make us what we are.
DescriptionDo you want the skills and confidence to prepare and deliver a powerful presentation, at any level? Well, now you can, and this programme will show you how, whether you are speaking at a board meeting, sales or management presentation, after-dinner speech, wedding, prize giving, or whenever you need to stand and speak with confidence.
DescriptionIn a Greek tavern, high over the small village of Aghia Anna, four people meet for the first time: Fiona, an Irish nurse; Thomas, a Californian academic; Elsa, a German television presenter; and David, a shy English boy. Along with Andreas, the old man who runs the taverna, they become close to each other after witnessing a tragedy when a pleasure steamer catches fire in the harbour. Nights of Rain and Stars is the story of one summer when Fiona, Thomas, Elsa, and David all have to face the particular life crisis which first made them leave their homes and end up in Greece. With the help of Vonni, a middle-aged Irishwoman who lives in the village and is now a near-native, they each find a solution, although not necessarily the one they anticipated.
