Falck Security, Dietmar Herrman, IT-Manager in Leipzig
|
|
Falck's headquarters are in Denmark and most of the internal communication is in English. At the FALCK convention in Denmark I was very impressed to see my European colleagues make their presentations in English.
That's why I took an English language course together with the entire FALCK Security team.
Although we had to invest 2 hours of our free time every week - not counting the additional homework we received via email - it was worth the effort and we had a lot of fun too.

I work for Getriebewerk-Leipzig and we manufacture industrial gearings. Most of the casings we need we export from a Czech company and nobody there speaks German and we don't speak Czech so we communicate in English.

Susanne Bartnick, Export Department, SAM Vertriebs GmbH & Co. KG
|
|
My name is Susanne and I work for SAM, a manufacturer of bathroom accessories and faucetstaps.
Our company's headqaurters headquarters are in Menden.
Right from the start of my apprenticeship I have been working for the export department in our Leipzig Branch.
The turnover figures for last year showed that the company has to concentrate on international sales so we decided to enlarge our export team in order to adapt to the current market demands.
When you work in the export department you must speak at least one foreign language and English is the best choice as it is spoken in most countries in the world. I have been learning English for about 11 years. Allthough I didn't have many opportunities to apply the language before my time at SAM, it didn't take long for me to get used to speaking English on a daily basis. Like me a lot of the people I deal with on the phone are not native English speakers so we share the same difficulties and often we have a lot to laugh about.
A good comand command of the English language opens your mind to other cultures and people which in turn broadens your horizons as you become more cosmopolitan.

In my job I need English because Nike has subsidiaries all over the world: The USA, Australia, Asia and Europe. All the communication within our organisation as well as with our customers is in English. That's why I decided to learn a profession with a special European qualification with advanced English language training and a work placement in England. Now, I'm planning to work a year in one of our subsidaries abroad so I can gather valuable experiences.

I work for a financial service company and I need English in my daily correspondence and when I make phone calls to our international clients and business partners. Most of them are from the UK and although some of them live in Germany and Switzerland they don't speak much German and always prefer to communicate in English.
When foreign visitors and business people come to our office I often get the opportunity to meet them and take part in the negociations and talks as I do the translation and interpreting for my line manger. I can learn so much from people with different cultural backgrounds and that's why I like my job a lot.

Matthias Hanns, Digitales Medien Zentrum Leipzig

I work as a programmer, network administrator and IT trainer and in my job I use the English language every day. Most IT terms are not translated into German and a lot of texts are available only in English. When I learn a new programming language, I always purchase literature in the original version - in English. When I work on larger projects I get support from professionals from all over the world and of course we communicate in English.

Now that the European unification is taking shape I decided to become a European Management Assistant with a special training in Euorpean Commerce Law and Euro-Marketing. As you can see I work for a company that operates on an international level and of course, it is essential to me that I have good communication skills in English.
When you can talk to people from other countries you get new ideas on how to conduct business as well as life in general. You also learn to appreciate a different type of humour and that is something we Germans really need.

I've been learning English for almost 12 years. In my opinion, English is essential if you want to be successful at work. Especially you work for a company that operates on an international level. However, English is very important in my private life, too.
For example, I have English speaking pen pals and I need English to design and program my website and explore the internet. I also like reading books in English and watching American and British movies in the original version. My favourite countries to travel to are Great Britain and Ireland. One of my biggest dreams is to take a trip through both countries. Of course, you need to speak English if you want to get to know the people in the UK and Ireland.
I've already been to England three times: Two times I have been on holiday in London and in 2001 I had a four week workplacement in Weymouth. During those four weeks I worked for a British company and stayed with a host family. It was a very good opportunity to practise and improve my English and I think native English speakers are your best "English teachers".
At the moment I don't need English that often at work but I'll soon get a job which involves communication in English.

Siegfried Bauer, TÜV Sachsen
|
|
As a test engineer at TÜV Sachsen I have to constantly take further training to keep up to date. Most publications on technical developments are in English and I can't afford to wait until a German translation is available.
TÜV provides me with very good career chances/opportunities and besides a willingness to learn a good command of the English language is necessary to fully use those chances. I want to improve my English to make my job even more secure and enable me to get quick access to vital information.
