Hi Ljiljan,
Both surprised how and surprised at how are acceptable.

Hi,
'Do' in this context suggests 'perform or 'manage to achieve'.

Because "to make" is akin to "to manufacture/create". And, as Alan pointed out, you need a verb that means "to perform/manage to achieve", and this verb is "to do". _________________ "He who tries to establish his point by much yelling shows that his reasoning is weak"
