would you please give me an example in which 'unless' means 'except if'

That's the usual meaning of "unless". E.g.:

"We'll go for a walk unless it rains" = "We'll go for a walk except if it rains"
"You can't come in unless you have a ticket" = "You can't come in except if you have a ticket"

(Sentences like these are not necessarily as natural with "except if", but the meaning is the same.)

"not unless" is one case I can think of where replacement of "unless" by "except if" doesn't really work, or is quite hard to understand.
